The Institute for Multi-Sensory Education offers "Sensational Strategies for Teaching Beginning Readers" for parents to use with their children to facilitate early reading development. This tutorial reading and phonics program is ideal for home schooling or the homeschool. Our program based on Orton-Gillingham methodology (multi-sensory, phonics based, highly structured) is used by leading educators across the country in the classroom as well as tutoring centers. Phonics instruction during initial reading development is critical according to Dr. Reid Lyons of the National Institute of Health. Studies at the NIH have shown that at least 95% of even the poorest readers can learn to read at grade level, if they are given early and proper phonics instruction. You can have an IQ of 145, be a great reasoner and still be a poor reader, say neuoropsychcologist Lyon. Kathy Lally and Debbie M. Price reported in the Baltimore Sun, Nov. 3, 1997, that Yale University scientists, using MRI technology, have demonstrated that the brain reads by breaking words into sounds. The brains of people who can't sound out words often look different on MRI pictures.
In the academic arena, science has been no match for fad and fashion, infused with politics and religion, according to the Baltimore Sun article. Since the 1970's, school districts across the country have abandoned phonics and phonics instructions in their reading programs for the more enticing "whole-language" programs which promise to teach children to read by immersing them in literature. In 1995 California declared a statewide crisis in reading and published: The California Task Force on Reading: Every Child a Reader. On Oct. 27, 1997, James Collin's published an article in Time Magazine entitled "How Johnny Should Read."
We believe all students can benefit from phonics instruction, which can be combined with "whole language" curriculums to form a balanced approach to language development. The IMSE has developed a multi-sensory phonics program which will empower parents to give their children a head start on basic reading skills, to support beginning readers with a solid foundation of sound and letter relationships, and to provide valuable assistance to children who are experiencing difficulty with the reading process. Even children with dyslexia or learning disabilities will benefit from the Orton-Gillingham method of phonics instruction for reading development.
